Lincoln, California – Lieutenant Commander Andrew Milne Mitchelson, Jr., U.S. Navy
(Ret.), passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, at Sutter Medical Center in
Sacramento, California, at the age of 78.
Born on March 20, 1947, in San Diego, Andrew graduated from Lincoln High School
before beginning a lifetime of service to his country. He served honorably in the U.S. Air
Force as an enlisted serviceman before pursuing higher education at the University of
California, San Diego, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1972.
Following graduation, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as
a Naval Ensign and Supply Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy, embarking on a
distinguished military career.
After commissioning, Andrew met the love of his life, Nancy, and they were married on
December 1, 1979. Their partnership became a cornerstone of a strong and loving
family. Andrew and Nancy welcomed their first son, Matthew, on May 19, 1983, while
stationed in Oakland, California, and their second son, Mark, on May 11, 1986, in
Wiesbaden, Germany, during their Navy service. The family retired from active duty on
July 1, 1993, after which Andrew continued to serve the public through work with the
General Services Administration (GSA) and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in
California. He ultimately retired in California, enjoying the fruits of a life dedicated to
service, family, and community.
Andrew is remembered as a man of integrity, devotion, and loyalty. He was a loving
husband, a proud father, and a doting grandfather to seven grandchildren, whose lives
he enriched with his unwavering support and gentle guidance.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Mitchelson; his sons, Matthew and Mark; their
wives, Brianna and Christen; and his seven grandchildren. Andrew’s life was a
testament to faith, family, and service—a legacy that will endure in the hearts of those
who loved him.
A memorial service and burial will be held with full military honors, reflecting a life
dedicated to the nation and the family he cherished above all else on Friday morning,
February 20, 2026, at the Green Valley Mortuary & Cemetery located in Rescue,
California.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV) “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept
the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
