On August 23, 2026, Joseph "Joe" Groll, Sr. gained his angel wings. Guided by deep faith, he lived his life as a devoted husband, a proud dad, grandpa, and pop-pop, and a loyal friend to many. Joe built a comfortable and fulfilling life, yet his greatest accomplishments were not measured by titles or accolades, but by the love he poured into his family, the meaningful traditions he created, and the adventures he embarked upon.
Joe was born on October 5, 1950 in Oakland, California. He spent his childhood in Oakland growing up with his 8 siblings, attending Oakland High, and then joining the Marines right before receiving his draft notice. He bravely went through basic training and was sent to Vietnam. He was there a short nine months and during combat he stepped on a landmine and by the grace of god only lost his left heel. Although his ankle bone was shattered into pieces, Joe recovered from his combat wound, and never let his foot (or pain) stop him from anything. He continued to pursue employment, getting a job in maintenance with the City of Fremont. He then married Dianne in 1972 and they began to build their life together and grow their family in Fremont. Through his dedicated service he progressed professionally from Building Inspector and Union Steward, to ultimately advancing into management prior to retirement. Beyond his professional career, he actively coached his children, served his church and community, and remained a steadfast pillar of support for his family and friends.
A proud Marine, Vietnam Veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, Joe was also the ultimate handyman. From remodeling kitchens and bathrooms to constructing decks or replacing appliances, he could fix anything that was broken. Whenever someone called him for repair advice, Joe wouldn't just explain what to do, he would offer to come over and help fix it himself.
Joe and Dianne adventured all around the world, cruising to multiple destinations on 5 different continents, visiting over 30 different countries. His camera roll will show that he enjoyed sunrises and sunsets, tropical locations, historic sites, and of course his beloved wife, Dianne.
Joe's life was centered around his family and his faith that provided him with strength and guidance throughout his years. One of Joe’s greatest joys was spending time with his family. It was important to him to be a part of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids life. Whether he was coaching, sitting on the sidelines, cheering in the stands, or front row and center stage, his presence and support was unwavering. Joe was known for being an avid Bay Area sports fan who you would see wearing his A’s, Raiders, or Warriors gear most days of the week. He retired from the City of Fremont and he and Dianne moved to Cameron Park eight years ago.
Joe is survived by his wife, Dianne Groll, who was his constant companion and the love of his life for 54 years. He was a loving father to his children, Jennifer Tamayo (Tony), Christina Kelley, Joseph Groll, Jr (Delanie), and Stacie Groll. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Symone (Brooks), Cole, Ember, Keanna, Liam, and Matilde, bonus grandchildren Travis and Lucas, and his great-grandchildren, Taesym and Bronx, along with a wide circle of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Rita Groll, his brothers Robert, William, Richard, Robert, and Walter, and his sisters Rosemary, Rita, and Louise. He is survived by his sister Catherine.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in Joe’s memory to either the Red Cross, a charity he supported regularly, or to Sutter Home & Hospice Care, which provided invaluable comfort to Joe and his family in his final days.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to our friends and family for their support and prayers during this difficult time. Joe's kindness and gentle spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
