Mary Clare Kitchell was born Feb. 27, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN in 1943 and worked for a about four years as a teacher. She married Ralph Kitchell in 1947 and they were married for 50 years until his death in 1997. Mary Clare was a homemaker and a skilled seamstress- sewing most clothes for the family. She and Ralph moved because of his career in veterinary medicine- staring in St. Paul, later Manhattan, KS, Ames, IA and then Davis, CA. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings as well as those with friends, neighbors and Ralph's university colleagues. Mary Clare loved to travel with Ralph and they went to Europe in 1957 andd later to Japan, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Canada. She volunteered at the Yolo County Historical Museum and enjoyed gardening, with a special interest in orchids in later years. She also enjoyed needlepoint and other crafts, and Masterpiece Theater on TV. She had a large collection of glass paperweights, many from her travels.
