Meredith "Merry" Bouley Hoag

–

Rescue, California

Meredith Bouley Hoag, known to family and friends as Merry, passed away on July 5, 2026 at the age of 72 in Somerset, CA. Merry was a wife, mother, sister, and friend to all (people and animals). Born in Warwick, RI and raised in Branford, CT, Merry was the youngest of four children to Muriel (Faulds) and Thomas Bouley. Merry’s love for animals, and in particular horses, was her defining passion. Much of her childhood was spent learning about horsemanship from her neighbor Mr. Blackstone, and riding and caring for his horse, Lucky. As a teenager and into early adulthood, Merry was often found riding her horse, Filly, with her beloved dog, Happy, running alongside them. She attended college at Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut, and after graduating with degrees in recreation and landscape design, she met and married her husband George Hoag. Merry and George settled in Storrs, CT, where they built a horse farm in 1983 and raised their children, Jess and Austin. Merry was active in the equestrian community in CT, competing in eventing and dressage competitions and volunteering, including serving as president for the CT Dressage & Combined Training Association. Her interests expanded into co-counseling and equine therapy, where she found a community to dedicate herself to helping others, in particular children and teens experiencing challenging circumstances. Merry and George were known for opening their home to family and friends, hosting Thanksgiving gatherings for over 10 years, and operating for a time as a bed and breakfast inn. The family moved to El Dorado Hills, CA in 2022, where Merry spent more recent years celebrating time with her grandchildren, exploring the West Coast, teaching watercolor classes, and riding her horse, Sassy.

Merry is survived by her husband of 43 years, George Hoag, her children Jess and Austin, daughters-in-law Jessie and Maggie, and her two treasured and beloved grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Margaret Voss Howard (John), brother Paul Bouley (Sherry), and sister-in-law Jane Peterson Bouley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her brother Robert Bouley. She also leaves behind a wide circle of lifelong friends whose lives were enriched by her creative and generous spirit, boundless energy, and kind heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to High Hopes.
