In Loving Memory of Michael James Hahn
January 23, 1959 – July 5, 2026
Michael James Hahn passed away peacefully at home in Camino, California, on July 5, 2026, surrounded by family and his beloved dog, Maddie. He was 67 years old.
Born on January 23, 1959, in Redwood City, California, Michael lived a life guided by courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to everyone he loved. He had an unmistakable presence – a quick wit, an adventurous spirit, and a gift for making others feel seen, protected, and valued. Whether sharing a story, making someone laugh with his dry humor, or offering quiet encouragement, Michael left people better than he found them.
Michael's story was one of resilience, determination, and hope. Early challenges shaped him, but never defined him. Instead, he intentionally built a life marked by perseverance, humility, generosity, and an enduring commitment to lifting others up – creating a legacy that will continue for generations.
Driven by equal parts work ethic and a remarkable intellect, Michael earned a scholarship to Humboldt State University, where his quick mind and insatiable curiosity opened doors that he had not always considered. At Humboldt, he excelled academically as an honor student and worked as a Spanish tutor, sharing both his knowledge and his ability to connect with others; he became the first in his family to graduate from college. Outside the classroom, he felt at home with a Frisbee in hand and proudly played on a recreational softball team – a team that, by his own account, never won a single game. What they lacked in victories, they more than made up for in camaraderie and legendary post-game adventures. Michael treasured the friendships he built at Humboldt, carrying relationships and joy from those years throughout his life.
For nearly three decades, Michael served with the San Jose Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant. Throughout his career, he held a wide range of assignments, including undercover narcotics investigations, the Intelligence Unit, leading the police academy, and supporting victims of violent crimes. In addition to his regular duties, he volunteered to represent the department on the SJPD Honor Guard at special events including PD-sponsored functions, community events, and officer memorial services – a reflection of his desire to honor others and represent something larger than himself. Regardless of the assignment, Michael approached every responsibility with integrity and deep compassion. Protecting others wasn't simply his profession – it was part of who he was.
His commitment to service extended far beyond law enforcement. After retiring from SJPD, Michael served for five years as the Harbor Master for the Brisbane Marina, combining his love of the water with his dedication to his community. He also volunteered extensively in Guatemala as a medical Spanish interpreter, helping bridge the language gap for underserved patients seeking care. He believed that kindness, dignity, and service had no borders.
Michael was never defined by a single title or accomplishment. He was an award-winning writer and poet whose words balanced wisdom, thoughtful introspection, keen observance, and levity. He was a martial artist, sailor, motorcyclist, outdoorsman, and lifelong student of the world. He embraced new experiences wholeheartedly, whether dancing with abandon, setting out on the water, exploring the outdoors, putting words to paper, or chasing whatever captured his curiosity next. His thirst for knowledge and understanding was endless, and he inspired those around him to live with the same sense of wonder.
Above all else, Michael was devoted to his family. He never missed an opportunity to tell the people he loved exactly how much they meant to him. His greatest pride was watching his children and grandchildren grow, celebrating their accomplishments, encouraging their dreams, and filling their lives with laughter, ridiculous impressions, detailed stories, and unconditional love.
We would be remiss not to mention Michael’s unmatched connection to dogs. They seemed to recognize in him the same steady kindness and gentle spirit that all who knew him did. From loyal companions to unexpected strays, every dog found a friend in him. We smile knowing that somewhere beyond our sight, a very happy pack is waiting for him.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Carey Hahn; his daughters, Sarah Hahn and her husband, Jonathan Yountchi, Jenna Hahn and her husband, Eric Volan, and Natalie Lokkart and her husband, Eric Lokkart; his step-daughters, Anjali Joseph and Lauren Joseph; his five cherished grandchildren; his sisters, Diane Brendan and Kellie Temby and her husband, Michael Temby; as well as many nieces, nephews, dear friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were made richer by knowing him.
Michael's legacy lives on in the countless people he protected, served, mentored, and loved. His example reminds us to meet the world with purpose and an open heart. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
