Born in Rockford, Illinois, July 13, 1922, passed away peacefully in Sacramento, California on May 20, 2011. Oldest of two children, Robert volunteered for service in the United States Navy shortly after December 7, 1941, serving in multiple engagements in the Pacific theater at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa as well as being present in Tokyo Bay on the day of the Japanese surrender. Upon returning from WW II he married longtime sweetheart, Patricia Brockman. Upon the outbreak of the Korean War he returned to active duty and served on a Destroyer attaining the rank of Petty Officer First Class before completing his active service for his country. Robert, a widower, was preceded in death by wives Patricia Burke (Brockman) and Luella Burke (Sailer). He was a third generation plumber and a 60 year member of the plumbers union. The family extends their gratitude to Pioneer House staff, First Call Hospice, and faithful friends Bill Myers and Cynthia and Rowland Jones for all their care and concern over the years. A private memorial service will be held on June 5, 2011. Robert is survived by sons Thomas, Richard, and William, as well as grandchildren Michelle Christensen, Kelly Burke-Doyle, Shannon Burke-Walker, Robert T. Burke, John Burke, Bill Burke, Kristen Burke and ten great-grandchildren. At Roberts request internment will be at the Point Loma National Cemetery near San Diego, California.
