Roger N. Kurokawa, 80, passed away on August 31, 2025, in Folsom, California. Born on May 13, 1945, in a relocation camp in Arkansas, Roger was raised in Lodi where he attended school and was active in Boy Scouts, student council, and sports. He later graduated from Sacramento State University with a bachelor's degree a teaching credential.
Roger served his country as a combat medic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War after being drafted. Following his military service, he dedicated over three decades to public service as a Supervising Probation Officer. He was among the first trained group of armed personnel and earned the respect and affection of colleagues and friends alike – fondly known as “Dr. K.” by Crafty.
A man of many passions, Roger shared 49ers season tickets with his friend Nial for 30 years and served as bar manager for the jazz festival for just as long. He was a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, loved listening to the Eagles and Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll,” and played softball for the Probation B team. Known for his great sense of humor and generous spirit, he was a resilient and joyful presence in the lives of those around him.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Janice; daughters Kris Bird (Troy) and Kim Sullivan; granddaughters Kayla Ortiz (Meline)(David), Mazie Bird and Delaney Bird; and great-grandsons Royce, Andrew, and Zayn – the apples of his eye. He is also survived by siblings Clyde, Curt, David (Amy), and Patsy; nephew Jason; and the extended Ellering family.
A memorial service will be held on September 25, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Green Valley Mortuary, 3004 Alexandrite Drive, Rescue (Cameron Park), followed by a military honor guard graveside tribute and a casual gathering in The Legacy Center at Green Valley Mortuary.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
